The European Commission has approved a €2.2 billion ($2.321 billion) aid package for Germany to support the country's low-carbon industrial processes, strengthen technological upgrading and clean energy use in its production process, and help it transition to a green "net zero economy." The move is expected to accelerate Germany's green transition around the world and improve energy efficiency.
The aid package was approved in accordance with the Interim Crisis and Transition Framework for State Aid adopted by the European Commission on March 9, 2023 and amended on November 20, 2023, to support key sectors in accelerating the green transition and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The funds will be used to support efforts to electrify industrial processes and to replace industrial fossil fuel use with renewable hydrogen or renewable hydrogen-derived fuels.
The aid will take the form of direct grants and will be open to companies in Germany's industrial sector that rely on fossil fuels for production. Eligible projects that receive assistance must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40 percent during production.
