Local media on January 1 news, Japan Microwave Chemical Co., Ltd. announced that it has successfully reduced iron ore to iron using microwave technology on a laboratory scale. It said the project could effectively help the steel industry achieve carbon neutrality.

In general, iron making is carried out by reducing melted iron ore and coal (coke) in a blast furnace or converter. The present blast furnace smelting method will inevitably emit a lot of carbon dioxide in the process of coal reduction. Japan Microwave Chemical Co., Ltd. said that with the microwave technology platform "Green MinING-MX" for Mining process development, it successfully reduced iron ore to iron in the laboratory, and solved some problems encountered in the previous use of microwave technology to reduce iron ore, laying the foundation for the commercialization of this technology.
Japan Microwave Chemical Co., Ltd. said that iron ore and coal used as a reducing agent easily absorb microwaves, and direct heating by microwave can reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The company aims to build practical technology in the future. By 2025, the company will be experimenting with its own standard bench equipment and looking for business partners with an eye toward future business development. In addition, the company plans to apply its technology to upstream processes in the ironmaking process.
